Children need the freedom and time to play. Play is not a luxury. Play is a
necessity.

Play energizes us and enlivens us. It eases our burdens. It
renews our natural sense of optimism and opens us up to new possibilities.

Toys from the 80’s
These are all toys that I had and loved as a child.
I still have some of these toys in my moms storage.
I played a lot as a
child with my cousins because my sister is almost 7 years younger than me. We
played outside a lot as children. Making up games, playing hide and go seek,
running races, skating and just any kind of sport you can think of. We played
outside after school, once we finished our homework or course. We started going
to summer camps at about 12 because we wanted to go on field trips. In our
family there was a time for work and a time for play and we got plenty of both.
My mom and grandmother made sure that we lived a great childhood full of play
and fun. I enjoyed my childhood and I am still a child at heart. I think that
all adults should have fun in their lives. We can get so caught up in working
and responsibilities that we forget to have fun. Sometimes I have to take a
break in my hectic life and go be a kid again and have fun. Like one on the quotes
I picked says. “We don't stop playing because we grow old; we grow old
because we stop playing.” You have to make time
for fun no matter hectic life gets. I think play is being robbed from children
today because parents have so many other things that they put ahead of their
children’s happiness. We have to let children be children.
I loved all of those toys as well. Your quote “We don't stop playing because we grow old; we grow old because we stop playing is exactly right. I have always been a very serious adult but as a child, I enjoyed playing. The stress of adult responsibility makes us forget how it feels to be carefree and just play.
ReplyDeleteVondrea,
ReplyDeleteI think it’s great that you still have some of your toys! Just in the last few months I got some of my toys out of storage from my Mom’s house to share with my daughter. She is now the proud mommy of my cabbage patch doll that is probably about 25 years old.
I agree with you that as adults we get caught up with the work in our lives and forget to have fun. As a parent I have realized this even more. When my daughter asks me to play with her, no matter how much work I have to get done, I consciously try not to say ‘I am busy’ and play with her instead. I tell myself being with my daughter and having fun in the moment is more important than work. This I admit is hard for me at times. As adults if we realized how important play is for both children and adults we would all be happier. “You have to make time for fun no matter how hectic life gets” I agree!
Vondrea,
ReplyDeleteIt is very true that children are being robbed of play. It is so important that as educators we educate the families about the importance of play and the connection it has to child development.
Hello Vondrea,
ReplyDeleteI like your quotes. I show remember those toys in my childhood days because I play with them also. I can remember those games to and not going outside until you finish your homework and summer camp was fun during the summer time. I really enjoyed your post because it brought back a lot of memories when I was young. Thanks for sharing!
I just had a flashback looking at your toys (laughs). I definitely had a few of them as a child, but my mother sent me outside with these toys. I wasn't allowed to stay in the house during the day after I completed my summer homework.
ReplyDeleteHello Vondrea,
ReplyDeleteThanks for your insightful story. I remember all these toys, bought many for my neices and newphews. I just love your quotes, especially the one "you are never too old to goof off", very true! Thanks.
